So I splurged. I got myself an ice cream maker. And I have never been happier. One of my best purchases I’d say.

I love treating myself to a good dairy free ice cream, and there are plenty on the market, but I usually don’t want to look at the ingredients because either there’s too many or I cannot pronounce a single one of them.

Unfortunately allergy friendly food is either made up of whole foods (which I love!) or it’s completely processed.

This is why I love making everything from scratch because I know what is going into it, and I can control what goes into it.

This ice cream is the best of both worlds. There’s only 5 minimal ingredients (no bananas because its not ice cream if the base is banana!), but this ice cream is decadent, fluffy and oh so creamy.

What’s the secret? Dairy free heavy whipping cream. I use Silk’s and it makes this ice cream unbelievably good.

I tried regular oat and almond milk and the flavor stayed great, but it ended up being pretty icy (pictured down below on the right). If you can’t get your hands on Silk’s Dairy Free Heavy Whipping Cream (pictured down below on the left), feel free to use coconut milk, oat milk or almond milk- just know it won’t be as creamy (but it will still taste delicious!).

Ingredients in Chocolate Ice Cream:

Dairy Free Heavy Whipping Cream- I use Silk’s Dairy Free Heavy Whipping Cream Alternative and would never go back to coconut milk or coconut cream. Holy smokes does it make this ice cream TRULY creamy. Say goodbye to icy ice creams or creamy ice creams with 50 different ingredients in them!

Cocoa Powder use unsweetened cocoa powder. To make this ice cream even richer, add more cocoa powder than what the recipe calls for. This ice cream produces a lighter chocolate flavor- it tastes like a soft serve twist with half chocolate and half vanilla together.

Maple Syrup- I chose to use maple syrup to sweeten this ice cream but you can use agave or honey. I have not tried granulated sugars. You can also add more sweetener based on your preference as well. Taste after you blend the ingredients and see if you want to add more.

Vanilla Extract pure vanilla extract. Even though we are making chocolate ice cream, vanilla extract is a must.

Salt- brings out the sweetness and flavors.

Tools needed to make creamy chocolate ice cream:

  • Blender– I have this Ninja blender and I love it. It’s high powered, and I’ve never been nervous about over running it, even when I make homemade oat flour out of these rolled oats.
  • Spatula
  • Ice cream maker– this is the ice cream maker that I bought and used. You can also make sorbets and frozen yogurt in it too!
  • Freezer friendly container to store the ice cream in
  • Ice cream scoop– or these cookie scoops can double as ice cream scoops!

How to make Creamy Dairy Free Ice Cream:

Blend: Blend all the ingredients together in a high speed blender.

Churn into ice cream: Process according to your ice cream maker‘s directions. I find that it helps to turn the ice cream maker on first, and then pour the mixture in.

Soft and Hard Ice Cream: Remove right away and serve for soft ice cream or transfer to a freezer proof container and freeze for a few hour or until frozen for hard ice cream.

How long does homemade ice cream last?

Since this is a smaller batch of homemade ice cream, this never lasts long in my house haha! But as long as its sealed in a freezer friendly container so that no air can get in, this homemade ice cream will last up to a month.
