This is the best apple crisp to make when you have extra or leftover apples lying around, but don’t want to go through the long process of making apple pie.  Apple pie is an American classic, but this Apple Crisp is a great substitute when you’re short on time, or want a quicker dessert that still satisfies an apple treat craving.

It’s also a perfect dessert for Thanksgiving because it can feed a group of people!  There are gluten and dairy free substitutions which makes it extremely versatile for everyone in the family! (Plus no one will even know, because it’s THAT delicious!)  Holidays can be really tough with allergies, especially Thanksgiving since it revolves around food and eating, but this is what this recipe is for! No more making two versions of the same exact dish, and no more stress around the holidays.  This Apple Crisp will satisfy anyone’s sweet tooth, and is perfect for the entire family, even those with allergies.

Ingredients:

Apples- you can really use any kind.  Apples that are best for baking are Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, Gala and Jonagold.  I used some red apples that needed to be used up, and the Apple Crisp still held up great and was delicious!

Coconut Oil I highly recommend using refined coconut oil so that there is no coconut taste or smell.  We use both melted and softened coconut oil in this recipe.  You can also sub butter in place of all coconut oil (melted and softened).

Cinnamon- the perfect spice complement to apples and any fall treat.  If there is a cinnamon allergy or not a fan of cinnamon, you can sub nutmeg and cloves.

Oat Flour- I make my own by blending these Trader Joe’s Gluten Free Rolled Oats until it reaches a super fine consistency. You can also buy oat flour at the grocery store.  I love Bob’s Red Mill brand.

Rolled Oats– I use Trader Joe’s Gluten Free Rolled Oats.  If gluten free, make sure your rolled oats are certified gluten free to avoid cross contamination.

Coconut Sugar You can also sub brown sugar.

Dairy Free Butter I use this vegan butter from Earth Balance.  I love these Earth Balance sticks!  They’re perfect for baking and cooking because they have the Tablespoon measurements on the wrapper, like normal dairy butter.

Salt- ties all the flavors together.

How to make The Best Apple Crisp:

Spray

Spray a 9×9 pan with cooking spray.

Peel and Core

Peel and core the apples.

Cut the apples into 1/4″ thick slices.  Try to get them to be the same thickness so they bake evenly.  Add the apple slices to a large bowl.

Melt the coconut oil and pour over the apple slices. Using a spatula, mix the coconut oil so that it evenly coats all the apple slices.  Add the cinnamon and mix again. Add the apple slices to the 9×9 pan and evenly distribute the slices.

Combine

In a medium bowl, combine the oat crumble ingredients until they are well mixed.

Cover

Pour the oat crumble over the apple slices in the pan so that it covers every apple slice.

Bake

Bake in the oven for 30-45 mins depending on how thick your apples are, and how tender you like them.
