I love reaching for a cup of hot chocolate during the fall and winter months as a nice, warm treat and even as a late snack. It’s harder to find pre-made mixes that are dairy free, so I typically make hot chocolate from scratch. But in a pinch I love this dairy free hot chocolate mix. It’s quick and easy, and you can even make it with just water.
This Easy 5 Minute Hot Chocolate is almost as easy as a hot chocolate mix. All you have to do is heat the almond milk up, add the rest of the ingredients, heat thoroughly and enjoy! Give it a try and see how amazing and quick this homemade hot chocolate is! You won’t want to go back to the pre-made mixes!

Ingredients:
Almond Milk– or use your favorite non-dairy milk. I use unsweetened original almond milk.
Cocoa Powder– unsweetened cocoa powder.
Agave Nectar– I prefer the taste of agave over maple syrup in this hot chocolate.
Vanilla Extract– adds the perfect touch of flavor.
Salt- do not skip this! A pinch goes a long way and is such a game changer in balancing the flavors.
Chocolate Chips- optional, but who doesn’t love extra chocolate. Use you’re favorite dairy free chocolate chips. I’ve used these Hu Gems Chocolate Chips and Enjoy Life chocolate chips.

- Sauce pan
- Whisk
How to make this Dairy Free Hot Chocolate:
Simmer
Bring almond milk to a simmer in a pan on medium heat.
Add the rest of the ingredients and whisk
Add the cocoa powder, agave, vanilla, sea salt and chocolate chips to the pan. Whisk until no clumps remain.
Heat thoroughly through
Heat thoroughly for another 1-2 minutes.
Pour into your favorite mug
Take off burner and pour into a mug.
Top it off
Top with dairy free whipped cream or marshmallows. Enjoy!

Ingredients
2 cups almond milk– or favorite non-dairy milk
2 Tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
2-4 Tablespoons agave nectar, depending on preference of sweetness
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Scant pinch of sea salt
Handful of dairy free chocolate chips *optional

Dairy free whipped cream
Marshmallows
Crushed candy canes
Directions
- Bring almond milk to a simmer in a pan on medium heat.
- Add the cocoa powder, agave, vanilla, sea salt and chocolate chips to the pan. Whisk until no clumps remain.
- Heat thoroughly for another 1-2 minutes.
- Take off burner and pour into a mug.
- Top with dairy free whipped cream or marshmallows. Enjoy!
