What’s the difference between potatoes au gratin and scalloped potatoes?
Honestly, not too much! Both use thinly sliced potatoes but scalloped potatoes are a simpler dish where the potatoes are baked in a basic cream sauce. Potatoes au gratin are more decadent in that they are baked in a creamy cheese sauce.
We take these au gratin potatoes to the next comfort level and add not only bacon, but breadcrumbs to the top as well.
Ingredients for this Dairy Free Potatoes au Gratin Recipe:
Golden Potatoes- you can use either golden potatoes or Yukon gold potatoes in this recipe. These potatoes are naturally creamy and it adds to the creaminess of this dish.
Dairy Free Butter
Gluten Free Flour- you can use any 1:1 gluten free flour here or even tapioca or arrowroot flour.
Non-Dairy Milk
Dairy Free Cheese- cheddar and mozzarella. You guys know I love and will always use GOOD PLANeT cheese shreds. It actually tastes like cheese which is so important since its a cheesy potato dish.
Salt and pepper
Bacon
Breadcrumbs– I used 4C Gluten Free Breadcrumbs. I put these on everything because I love a good crunch in any dish. If dairy free, make sure to get the plain or Panko gluten free breadcrumbs because the seasoned ones have cheese in them and are not dairy free.
Tools needed to make Potatoes au Gratin:
- Measuring cups and spoons
- Cutting board and knife
- 9×13 dish
- Sauce pan
- Rubber spatula
- Aluminum foil
How to make this creamy Dairy Free Potatoes au Gratin Recipe:
Prepare the potatoes: Slice the potatoes into even 1/8″ slices. Transfer them to the baking dish with the slices upright, slightly slanted, and staggered so the cheese sauce can seep in between the slices (refer to the photo above).
Make the cheese sauce: Melt the dairy free butter in a sauce pan over medium low heat. Add the flour and mix together until no lumps remain. Add the milk and cheeses to the sauce pan. Heat until the cheeses have melted and have fully incorporated into the sauce, stirring constantly. Season with salt and pepper.
Assemble the dish: Crumble the bacon pieces over the potato slices. Pour the cheese sauce over the potatoes. Melt the butter and mix it with the breadcrumbs. Spread the breadcrumbs over the potatoes. Bake according to the directions below in the recipe card.
Tips for the best Dairy Free Potatoes au Gratin:
- I sliced the potatoes by hand but you could also use a mandolin slicer for easy and even slicing.
- When add the potato slices to the dish, make sure there is enough room between the slices. We do not want them packed. Make sure they are slanted and staggered (refer to the photos in the post) so that the cheese sauce can get in-between the slices and everything can be coated.
- Make sure your oven rack is in the center of the oven so your dish is evenly heated and no top or bottom gets burned.
- For extra crispy potatoes, after you have thoroughly cooked the potatoes, broil on low until your desired crispness.

How to store leftover au Gratin Potatoes:
These potatoes can be stored in the fridge for 3-4 days. Reheat in the microwave, on the stovetop in a skillet, or in the oven. For optimum crispiness, reheat in the oven.
