Reasons to love Mint Chocolate Covered Oreos:

  • Simple, easy and quick to make
  • Only 3 simple ingredients
  • Easily customizable
  • Perfect for all occasions
  • Great for gift giving
  • The perfect no-bake treat for Christmas and St. Patty’s Day
  • Can be made entirely gluten and dairy free (and vegan friendly)

Ingredients in Chocolate Dipped Oreos:

Oreos- I used gluten free mint Oreos, but you can use gluten free or regular. You can also use regular, double stuffed or mint Oreos for this recipe. We are adding peppermint extract to the chocolate for an added mint flavor, so they will still be slightly minty if you don’t use mint Oreos.

Chocolate Chips- use your favorite chocolate chips or melting chocolate. The smoother and creamier the chocolate, the better!

Coconut Oil use naturally refined coconut oil so that there is no coconut taste or smell. If you are using a dairy free chocolate, or chocolate chips, coconut oil will help smooth the chocolate out. High quality, smooth dairy free chocolate can be hard to find, and chocolate chips have additives in them making them not melt very smoothly. The addition of coconut oil will add the needed creaminess to the dairy free chocolate or chocolate chips, creating smooth and creamy chocolate dipped Oreos.

Peppermint ExtractI love adding a hint of peppermint extract to the chocolate (but not too much or else it will be too overpowering). You don’t have to add any peppermint extract either! If you leave it out and use mint Oreos they will still be plenty minty. If you use regular Oreos and no extract, then you have plain chocolate dipped Oreos. All options turn out delicious!

Sprinkles or Additional Toppings- you can leave these Oreos plain, or sprinkle your favorite sprinkles or any additional toppings you’d like to add. Other ideas are chocolate drizzle or green-dyed white chocolate drizzle.

How to make Chocolate Dipped Oreos:

Melt the chocolate: Melt the chocolate by your preferred method. Once melted, stir in the peppermint extract.

Dip the Oreos: Using a fork, dip the Oreo’s into the chocolate, making sure they are fully covered. Run the bottom of the fork over the side of the dish, getting rid of any excess chocolate (you can also gently bounce the fork off the dish to help get rid of any extra chocolate as well). Transfer the chocolate dipped Oreo to a parchment lined cookie sheet. Repeat until all Oreos have been covered. If topping with sprinkles, top the Oreo’s with sprinkles after every 5 Oreo’s so the sprinkles stick to the chocolate.

Chill and set: Transfer the Oreo’s to a flat surface in the fridge. Chill until set, about 20-30 minutes.

Storage: These cookies can be stored at room temperature in an airtight container for up to a week, in the fridge for up to two weeks, or in the freezer for up to three months when sealed properly (my personal favorite! They’re super crunchy right out of the freezer!).

Tips for the best Chocolate Covered Oreos:

  • Use high quality chocolate: this produces the creamiest and smoothest chocolate. It can be hard to get high quality dairy free chocolate, but any chocolate will work and still taste amazing! I mean, it’s still chocolate so what’s not to love! 🙂
  • Try to get rid of as much excess chocolate as you can: when dipping the Oreo’s I like to bounce my fork off the dish and the scrape the bottom of my fork on the edge of the dish to get rid of as much extra chocolate as possible. Extra chocolate will pool at the bottom of your Oreo and create puddles. They will still taste delicious, but just won’t look as good. If you are using chocolate chips, the addition of coconut oil will help smooth the chocolate out, creating the perfect chocolate covered Oreos.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Do I need any special tools to make these Chocolate Covered Oreos?

Nope! These Oreos are simple and easy to make. All you need is a glass bowl (or double boiler) to melt the chocolate, a fork and a cookie sheet or tray covered in parchment paper or wax paper.

Do I have to use mint Oreos or can I use a different flavor?

These chocolate dipped Oreos are highly customizable! You can use regular or double stuffed Oreos, or you can leave out the peppermint extract and use any Oreo flavor for simple chocolate covered Oreos.

How long do Chocolate Covered Oreos last?

These Oreos are very shelf stable and will stay fresh in an airtight container at room temperature for 1-2 weeks. You can also keep in the fridge or the freezer for longer keeping. My favorite is the freezer- they’re extra crunchy right out of the freezer. Just be cautious when eating them right out of the freezer. You may want to defrost them by keeping them on the counter for 10-20 minutes before enjoying.

Can I make these Oreos in advance?

Yes! Since they keep so well you can make them up to a week beforehand. They especially stay fresh if you freeze them. Since they keep so well, they make for great gift giving!

Can I use chocolate chips instead of melting chocolate?

You can (especially if you are dairy free), but I highly recommend using a high quality melting chocolate. It produces a creamier and smoother chocolate resulting in beautiful chocolate dipped Oreos!

Can I use mint extract instead of peppermint extract?

I would stick to peppermint extract for these mint chocolate Oreos. Mint extract is a combination of spearmint and peppermint where as peppermint extract is strictly just peppermint. Peppermint extract pairs much better with chocolate than mint extract.
