Ingredients in Gluten Free and Vegan Chocolate Chip Donuts:

Almond Flour make sure to use blanched almond flour instead of unblanched.

Coconut Flour this helps to absorb some of the liquid and provides structure.

Tapioca Flour this is the needed starch that helps prevent any crumbling with the donuts. You can also sub cornstarch or arrowroot starch.

Plain Yogurt- I used a dairy free plain yogurt, but you can also use a dairy free sour cream. If not dairy free, you can use regular plain yogurt or sour cream.

Milk of Choice- I used plain unsweetened almond milk.

Maple Syrup- I haven’t tried it, but you can try to sub with honey, but know that they will no longer be vegan.

Baking Soda and Salt

Chocolate Chips- we are using both regular and mini chocolate chips in this recipe. Mini chocolate chips are used in the batter and the regular chips are melted to make a ganache.

Tools needed to make Gluten Free and Vegan Donuts:

  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Glass bowl
  • Rubber spatula or wooden spoon
  • Piping bag- I used a Ziploc bag and cut the corner off
  • Silicone donut mold- this is the one that I used. I highly, highly recommend using a silicone mold. Not only is it easier to get the donuts out once they’re done, it’s also easy to clean as well.
  • Wire cooling rack

How to make Baked Chocolate Chip Cookies:

Make the dough: Whisk the dry ingredients together in a large bowl. Add the wet ingredients to the bowl and mix together until well combined. Fold in the mini chocolate chips.

Pipe into the donut mold: Transfer the dough into a piping bag or a ziploc with the corner cut off. Evenly pipe the dough into the greased donut mold and fill all the way to the top. This should make 6 donuts. You can also use a spoon and evenly scoop the dough into the donut mold.

Bake: Bake according to the directions below in the recipe card.

Cool: Remove from the oven and let the donuts cool in the donut mold for 10 minutes before removing and placing onto a wire cooling rack.

Make the ganache: Once the donuts have cooled, make the chocolate ganache by melting the chocolate chips and milk together by your preferred method. Top the donuts with the ganache and your favorite sprinkles. The ganache will harden and set after a half hour or so.

Frequently Asked Questions:

How long will these donuts last?

These donuts will last 2-3 days at room temperature in an air-tight container.

Can I store my donuts in the fridge?

Yes you can! Store the donuts in an airtight container and they will last up to a week in the fridge.

Can I make these donuts in advance?

I wouldn’t recommend it since donuts tend to get stale quickly and are best enjoyed the day they are made.

Why are my donuts dry or gummy?

This is most likely the result of over mixing the batter and over baking the donuts. Make sure you mix the ingredients until they are just blended to ensure the donuts stay fluffy and do not get gummy. Bake the donuts until the edges are golden. To make sure the donuts are fully cooked, stick a toothpick through the center and make sure there are no crumbs on the toothpick. If there are, cook for another minute or two, or until the toothpick comes out clean.

What kind of yogurt can I use?

If you are dairy free like I am, I recommend using any yogurt that is plain and not sweetened. I used a coconut milk yogurt, but you can use any nut-based yogurt as well. You can also sub dairy free sour cream if that’s easier for you. If you are not dairy free, you can use whatever plain yogurt you have on hand whether that is regular plain yogurt or greek yogurt. You can even use regular sour cream.

Can I use a different glaze or frosting?

Absolutely! If chocolate isn’t your thing, you can use a regular powdered sugar, milk and a splash of vanilla glaze or even a vanilla frosting. In my opinion, the topping is what makes these donuts, so use your favorite!

What other toppings can I use?

I personally love sprinkled donuts and have since I was a kid. I love adding festive sprinkles for whatever holiday is coming up, or you can use regular rainbow or chocolate sprinkles. If you want to switch it up you can top these donuts with mini chocolate chips, crushed peanuts, freeze dried strawberries or blueberries, a peanut butter drizzle, a white chocolate ganache, or just with the ganache or frosting.
