two dairy free shamrock shakes with whipped topping

Tis the season for the Shamrock Shake! McDonald’s iconic drink during the St. Patty’s Day season.  Vanilla ice cream and mint flavoring collide into a delicious minty green milkshake that’s topped off with whipped cream. Though it’s delicious and a decadent treat, it’s packed with dairy and a ton of sugar.  If you’re looking for a dairy free or lighter version, look no further! No need to skimp out on the creaminess and mintiness, this Copycat Shamrock Shake has it all.

The ingredients listed in McDonald’s Shamrock Shake are vanilla soft serve and Shamrock Shake syrup topped off with whipped topping.  In replacement of the vanilla soft serve, we’ll sub a dairy free vanilla ice cream.  Shamrock Shake syrup is basically mint flavored simple syrup that’s colored green. There is no need to add simple syrup to this lightened up Copycat Shamrock Shake, so in replacement we’ll sub non-dairy milk, mint extract and green food coloring. Feel free to top with dairy free whipped topping and a maraschino cherry, green sprinkles, or melted chocolate!

This recipe is for a single serving, but can easily be doubled, tripled or even quadrupled.

Try this Chocolate Peppermint Oreo Bark or these ultra creamy and delicious Chocolate Peppermint Whoopie Pies.  Both would pair well with this Copycat Shamrock Shake. Bring on the mintiness!

Ingredients:

Dairy Free Vanilla Ice Cream- my favorite brand of dairy free ice cream is So Delicious.  They have a variety of dairy free ice cream flavors made out of various dairy free milks such as almond milk, cashew milk and coconut milk. I used their Very Vanilla Cashewmilk ice cream in this recipe and loved it! Cashewmilk ice cream is extra creamy which only adds more creaminess to the shake! My favorite ice cream flavor? Salted Caramel Cluster by So Delicious. Its sooo creamy and decadent. It’s heaven in a pint sized carton.

Non-Dairy Milk- I used Ripple Unsweetened Original milk. I love their brand and their products. Dairy free milk that is high in protein, calcium, Vitamin D and low in sugar. Its extra thick and creamy, almost like half and half (they even have a dairy free half and half!). This works great in a milkshake because it makes it extra creamy and less runny cause who wants ice cream flavored soup? I worked in an ice cream shop for 4 years and saw some pretty soupy milkshakes ha! I’m a firm believer in a thick milkshake.

Mint Extract- make sure to use pure mint extract and not peppermint extract.

Green Food Coloring- I just used a basic food coloring, but if vegan use a vegan food coloring.  Can also add a tiny bit of spirulina powder for an all natural food coloring without affecting the taste.

Non-Dairy Whipped Topping- I recommend Reddi-Wip’s non-dairy whipped topping which I can find at most stores near me.  I also really like Aldi’s non-dairy whipped topping too!

Tools needed to make this Copycat Shamrock Shake:

  • Blender– this is the blender that I have and use. I love it! It blends through anything without any trouble or risk of burning out the motor. I use it to make homemade oat flour too!
  • Ice cream scoop– more comfortable that just using a spoon, especially when the ice cream is too hard!
